Philosopher and theologian Saint Augustine said that the world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. The world, to continue his analogy, is something to be enjoyed from one cover to the other. Naturally, the world is a pretty big book and can’t be enjoyed entirely. But here are some practical tips to keep in mind while traveling.
- Avoid carrying cash. Cash is easily stolen or lost, so use something like a prepaid Visa card. Even if you lose a prepaid card, it’s hard for someone else to use it. And since the card has a finite amount of money on it overspending is less of a problem.
- Set an itinerary. You don’t have to strictly schedule the entire trip, but planning ahead and making hotel reservations in advance will save time. You can even save money if discounts or reduced rates are available.
- Travel safely. Foreign environments, even if in the same country, can offer a variety of potential dangers. An out-of-place traveler is a good target for robbers or scammers. Be careful. Keep your belongings secure, use common sense, and know how to contact local authorities.
- The fourth tip is very important. Have fun. Take pictures, but don’t spend the entire trip behind a camera. Be safe, but don’t obsess over security. Keep a schedule, but don’t make it so rigid that it becomes limiting.
The world is a large, daunting book to read, but you can still travel. Read a few chapters at a time here and there. Throw in a bookmark and come back later.
